All about the CPE requirement for CGEIT Certificate
ISACA administers the vendor-neutral Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT) Certification in IT governance. ISACA is an international professional organization with members from all around the world who are all interested in IT governance. It offers several different certifications for individuals at different levels of their careers. The CGEIT Certificate is intended to verify the capabilities of IT professionals in managing IT enterprise governance.
The certification validates a professional's proficiency with enterprise IT governance principles and practices. Additionally, it demonstrates their ability to introduce IT governance into a business. Organizations across industries like, banking, services, networking, finance, and government, universally accept the CGEIT Certification. Like all other ISACA certifications, CGEIT Certification too has specific CPE policy that must be met to keep the credentialactive after its initial term has expired.
What are the CPE requirements for CGEIT Certificate?
The CGEIT Certification should be maintained by earning Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits. The purpose of the CPE policy is to make sure that professionals are competent and knowledgeable about enterprise IT governance. According to the CGEIT CPE regulation, applicants must earn CPE credits during a yearly and three-year certification period.
There are three fundamental CPE requirements for CGEIT renewal. These are:
Earn a minimum of 20 CGEIT CPE credits each year: ISACA expects CGEIT certification holders to maintain their knowledge current with the changing market dynamics. In order to keep and renew their CGEIT certification, they must get 20 CPE credits annually.
Earn 120 CGEIT CPE credits in a three-year period: Candidates must obtain a minimum of 20 CPE credits annually, but by the end of the three-year CGEIT renewal cycle, they must accumulate 120 CPE credits. After receiving their CGEIT certification, a three-year period begins in January of the following year and ends in December of the third year.
Pay annual maintenance fee: Candidates must pay an annual maintenance fee to maintain their CGEIT Certification. For ISACA members, this costs USD 45; for non-members, it costs USD 85. Professionals will not be able to access the ISACA CPE submission system to finish their CGEIT CPE reporting if they do not pay the maintenance fee.
In addition to fulfilling the three basic CPE requirements, applicants must follow ISACA's Code of Professional Ethics and submit to an annual CPE audit if selected. CGEIT designation of an individual will be revoked if they fail to meet certain certification standards.
How to earn CGEIT CPE credits?
According to ISACA “Activities that qualify for CPE include technical and managerial training. This training must be directly applicable to the field of IT governance to ensure that a proper balance of professional development is attained. CPE hours related to management skills must be relevant to the management of IT governance”.
CGEIT CPE Training: Professionals can enroll in IT governance courses that are Non-ISACA or ISACA approved to earn CPE credits for renewal. After the course is finished, they will be able to acquire CPE credits. ISACA gives 1 CPE credit for every hour of training. Earning CPEs from the training course is unlimited, thus candidates can earn all 120 CPEs from the CPE courses.
Self-paced CGEIT CPE Course: Professionals have the option of enrolling in CGEIT CPE self-study courses, which will enable them to earn CPE credits. Upon completion, the course provider is offer a certificate of completion, which lists the CPE credits earned for that particular course. Due to its affordability and flexibility, it is the preferred method for collecting CPE.
Attending Events or Presentations: CGEIT professionals can earn CPE on non-ISACA professional activities and meetings. These activities include in-house training, workshops, conferences, seminars, university courses, and professional meetings. They can obtain a maximum of 10 CPE credits per year or a total of 30 CPE credits in 3 years time.
Teach and Earn: Designing and delivering self-study educational courses and formal educational presentations on IT governance are included in these activities. People who desire to devote their time to teaching others about IT governance are provided a lot of points by ISACA. Candidates will earn five credit hours for presentations and courses. They will get 10 CPE hours for a 2-hour presentation.
Publishing: CGEIT Certification holders earn CPE credits by publishing books, and magazines and writing blogs related to IT governance. They will earn CPE credits based on the number of hours they take to complete the publication.
Volunteering: Professionals can also earn CPE credits by taking part in a variety of ISACA-sponsored events. They may also work for organizations that support the enterprise’s IT governance. Depending on the actual number of hours, CPE credits can be obtained.
Working on ISACA’s Committees/Boards: Candidates can participate in these activities as an ISACA chapter officer or on ISACA's boards, committees, subcommittees, and task forces. A maximum of 20 free CPEs can be earned annually for CGEIT professionals, who can earn one CPE hour for each hour of participation. It has a 20-hour annual limit per ISACA certification.
What happens if candidates do not comply with CGEIT CPE policy?
CGEIT Certified individuals who violate the CPE Policy will have their credentials revoked, losing the ability to identify themselves as certified individuals, and having their status recorded as such on requests for certification confirmation. However, by submitting an application to the CGEIT Working Group, it could be possible to reinstate it. The reestablishment request should be thoroughly explained in the appeal, and the CPE records from the cycle period to the current year should also be included. If the appeal is upheld, the person will be reinstated after paying any outstanding confirmation maintenance costs and a USD 50 reestablishment fee. If the appeal is rejected, credentials must be activated by retaking and passing the exam. Additionally, the individual must reapply for confirmation with the necessary experience.
