Overview of the RMP Certification process

Step 1: Meet Eligibility Criteria

  • Secondary degree
  • 4500 hours of experience in handling project risks, and
  • 40 hours of project risk management education,
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3000 hours of experience in handling risks, and
  • 30 hours of project risk management education

Step 2: RMP application submission

Once candidates have met the requirements for eligibility, their next task is to complete the examination application available on the PMI website. It includes all the relevant information regarding academics and qualifications. The applicant has 90 days to submit their application. After the form is submitted, PMI reviews it within 5 days. Candidates will be informed to pay the examination fee if their application is not chosen for auditing.

Step 3: PMI Audit process

If the application is chosen for auditing, the applicant must provide the following documentation to PMI.

  • Copies of the diploma/global equivalent
  • Signatures from supervisor or manager from the project recorded in the experience verification section of the application
  • Copies of certificates and/or letters from the training institute for each course recorded on the application to meet the required contact hours of project management education

Candidates have 90 days to finish this procedure and PMI takes about 5 to 7 working days to respond. Candidates can pay the examination cost once the audit has been successfully completed.

Step 4: Application payment process

After completing the application and audit process, the next step is to pay the fee. The fee depends on the candidates’ PMI membership. When PMI receives the payment, candidates will receive an email with their eligibility ID. Using this eligibility ID, they can schedule their RMP Exam. The successful completion of payment marks the beginning of one year eligibility period. Candidates are allowed to retake three times exams within one year eligibility period after the first attempt.

Candidates can reschedule or cancel their exam at any time up to 48 hours before their scheduled exam appointment. However, there will be a fee for cancellations and late rescheduling. Candidates will be charged a cost of USD 70 if they want to reschedule or cancel their exam within 30 days of their scheduled appointment. The extenuating circumstance policy may be applicable in cases of emergency if individuals are unable to change their exam appointment 30 days prior to their exam appointment.

However, PMI will assess each of these circumstances individually to decide whether or not a refund of the rescheduling cost is justified. PMI will forfeit the entire exam fee if they cancel less than two days before their scheduled exam time.

Step 5: Taking RMP Certification Exam

The PMI-RMP Certification Exam is comprised of 115 multiple-choice and multiple-answer select questions. Out of the 115 questions, 15 are considered pretest questions and these questions do not affect the final score. The exam duration is 2.5 hours.

After candidates finish their first exam section (about 58 questions) and reviewed all of their responses, they can take a 10-minute break. They are not allowed to return to the questions from the previous segment of the exam once they have evaluated their responses and commenced their break. After their 10-minute break, candidates will be able to resume their exam.

Step 6: RMP Certification cycle

The RMP Certification cycle begins once professionals pass the exam. Candidates must pay the renewal fee and acquire 30 PDUs during a three-year cycle in order to maintain their credentials. These 30 PDUs can be divided up into the following categories: 18 minimum PDUs for Education and 12 maximum PDUs for Giving Back.

PMI suspends applicants' RMP Certificates for a year if they fail to meet the continuous certification criteria (CCR) in the allotted three years. Due to this suspension, they won't be able to represent themselves as active credential holders or use the credential logo. The certificate would be considered to have expired if applicants failed to fulfill the CCR even after their suspension period had ended. Additionally, individuals should reapply for the RMP Certification if they want to utilize the credential again.

The RMP Certification is the endorsement and verification of a professional's effectiveness and skill in comprehending, identifying , and implementing risk management techniques. No, the PMP and RMP are independent credentials, and applicants for the RMP Exam can apply without having PMP. However, before applying for the exam, they must meet the qualifying requirement set by PMI.

The RMP application form cannot be downloaded as a PDF from the PMI website to be completed offline. they can use the only online form to apply for exams which is easy and convenient for candidates to use.

RMP aspirants can enroll in an RMP Training to prepare for the exam. Training helps candidates gain the skills and knowledge necessary to pass the exam. They can also refer to PMBOK and other reference material to gain information about the exam domain.
